Students learn about segregation and racism of the 1950's and 60's

On Wednesday 10/15, our 8th grade English classes were fortunate enough to have 3 guest speakers from the community come to speak to the students about living through the 1960's, when segregation was still legal. Our English classes are currently reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963, a novel that heavily addresses segregation and racism. The speakers include Ms. Mello's parents, who were active in freedom marches during that time, and a retired fire chief, Mr. Ben Holman, who was directly affected by the inequalities of that time.
