school profile
Gompers Charter Middle School was created in 2005 to establish a college preparatory urban school that prepares children, both academically and socially, for success in the UC / CSU college system and in the professional world beyond.
GCMS serves approximately 800 students in grades 6-9. GCMS is a partnership with the University of California, San Diego and works in close collaboration with the UCSD CREATE office.
Each school day begins with 90 minutes of Math and English while other core courses such as Social studies, History, Science and a Foreign language are offered on alternative afternoons. Furthermore, the school day has been extended an hour and a half to include a new after school program called Encore. Encore offers students an outlet to achieve in student government, sports, and various programs to be guided by the interests of the students. Family and community involvement is crucial to success at GCMS.
Successful GCMS families understand and support students as they undergo the rigor of college preparatory work and the rewards - and challenges - that the GCMS program entails. Throughout the school year, supports will be designed to assist all students and families meet a challenging curriculum. GCMS will institute a “Zero Tolerance” policy with regards to discipline and academic achievement. Our partnership with UCSD offers tutorial services from UCSD graduate students as well as advisory and administrative support for the GCMS staff. Read our charter document
